About Gonex

The story behind
the hub.

Where we come from, what we believe, and where we're going — told honestly.

Our story

How Gonex started

Gonex Innovation Hub was born from a simple but frustrating observation: the Joe Gqabi District Municipality is home to tens of thousands of young people with ambition, creativity, and ideas — but almost no infrastructure to act on them. The nearest innovation hub, co-working space, or structured skills program is over 100km away.

The founders — young people from Sterkspruit themselves — decided that waiting for someone else to bring opportunity here was no longer an option. They set out to build the infrastructure they wished had existed when they were starting out.

Gonex opened its doors as the first innovation hub in the region. It is not a polished product of a corporate CSI budget. It is a grassroots, founder-built space driven by the belief that geography should not determine your ceiling.

Gonex Innovation Hub — Sterkspruit, Eastern Cape
Mission & vision

What drives us every day

Our Mission

To provide accessible digital skills, entrepreneurship support, and collaborative workspace to young people in the Eastern Cape — enabling them to learn, build, and grow regardless of their starting point.

Our Vision

A Joe Gqabi District where every motivated young person has access to the tools and community they need to create economic opportunity for themselves and their community.

Core values

Community first

Every decision we make starts with the question: does this serve our community?

Radical access

Cost, background, or experience must never be a barrier to opportunity at Gonex.

Honest progress

We celebrate real milestones and are transparent about where we still have work to do.

Practical outcomes

Skills taught here lead to real jobs, real businesses, and real income — not just certificates.

Collaboration

The best things get built together. We create space for people to connect and co-create.

Accountability

We hold ourselves to the same standards we encourage in the entrepreneurs we support.

Our approach

What makes Gonex different

There are other organisations working on youth development. Here's what sets Gonex apart.

01

Built by the community, for the community

Gonex is founded and run by people who grew up in Sterkspruit. We are not an outsider program arriving to solve a problem — we are insiders who decided to build the solution.

02

Physical presence in an underserved region

We are not an online program or a visiting workshop. We are a permanent, accessible, physical space in the Joe Gqabi District — the first of its kind here.

03

Whole-person support, not just training

We offer workspace, mentorship, community, and business support alongside skills training. We understand that people need more than content — they need an environment to succeed.

04

Committed to measurable, real-world outcomes

Our success is measured in jobs created, businesses launched, and skills applied — not just program completions. We align with IRIS+ metrics and UN SDGs 4, 8, and 9.

Our roadmap

Where we're going

These are our near-term goals. We share them openly — not as promises, but as the commitments we're working toward.

1

Open the hub and enrol the first 50 members

Establish the physical space, finalise core programs, and onboard the founding cohort of members and workspace users.

2

Deliver the first digital literacy and entrepreneurship cohorts

Run structured, assessed programs and document outcomes rigorously so we can improve with every cohort.

3

Secure operational funding and key partnerships

Raise the R260,000 needed for first-year operations and establish relationships with schools, government, and development organisations in the region.

4

Launch the alumni network and mentorship program

Connect graduates with jobs and capital, and activate alumni as mentors for the next cohort — creating a self-sustaining loop of opportunity.

Be part of what we're building.

Join the hub, support our mission, or simply get in touch. Every connection moves us forward.
